Throughout Europe, major changes occurred on the art scene post WW2, where artists had to navigate new territory, come to terms with a new reality, and find new means of expression. Malta was no exception. What began as a reaction to the teaching at the Malta Government School of Art that was strict, inflexible and routine, eventually resulted in the formation of the Modern Art Circle in 1952, with George Preca (1909-1984) elected first president. The Circle brought like-minded artists together, and they were able to discuss their works, ideas and show their art to a very skeptical public. The Modern Art Circle, which was renamed the Modern Art Group after just one year and eventually became Atelier โ56, strove hard, as a constantly growing group, to promote the modern art movement in Malta through exhibitions, catalogues, radio and tv programs โ to both the Maltese public and an international audience overseas.
In addition to the permanent collection, the Victor Pasmore Gallery will also promote Maltese Modern Artists. The works of key figures in the story of 20th-century art in Malta will be on rotation as part of the galleryโs display.
